Statement - Daniel Lafferty
I have been a practicing
professional craft person for over 20 years, originally studying a Diploma
Visual Art at the Canberra School of Art.
I specialise in
functional wood fired pieces decorated with a paddle and anvil technique that
is Korean inspired.
Bega Valley has a wealth
of raw materials such as clay, glaze materials, black wattle wood ash, feldspar
and pyrophelite. I enjoy working in my natural environment, collecting
materials locally and utilising these in my work.
I use a combination of
clay, stone, wood ash and fire to decorate my thrown forms. Each piece is hand
crafted and individually enriched by the endless variations of the natural ash
glazes that capture the essence of the clay body and the firing process.
Daniel Lafferty and partner Gabrielle Powell
established Bandicoot Pottery in 1990. Specializing in wood fire with
professional studio facilities including 3 wood kilns, anagama and trolley
kilns which I have built and fired over 40 times for firings of 70-120 hours at
temperatures up to 1320`C. The pottery is situated about 5 kms east of Cobargo
on Tyrrells Road and visitors are welcome by appointment.
